PhotoBot is the first planned extension to utilize BARB as a mobile platform. In fact, BARB is a result of the initial PhotoBot. As I was designing the platform for PhotoBot I needed to determine the best way to make the bot collapsible for transportation. I decided to make the split from the mobile base just above the platter on which the primary processor will sit. This seemed logical as this is the minimum component level needed for the mobile platform. Once that was determined the rest of the design was simple.
BARB is a large, generic robot platform intended to be used as base for multiple projects. It is a 24" diameter round platform powered by a Power Wheels motor, gearbox, and wheel set. The wheels are configured along the width center axis and inset into the base to allow for a compact unit. Two casters, one each front and back, provide additional stability and full range of movement. Two 12 volt sealed lead acid (SLA) batteries are nestled between the gearboxes. A second platform is set 10" above the base to provide a surface for electronics, sensors, or any other purpose.
